Søknadssammendrag

With this project we aim to establish a sustainable cooperation on education and research between Bergen University College (HiB), the University of Bergen (UiB), and the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), by developing a joint Master course and establish formalized agreements of student and staff mobility.

The project will focus on the joint development of course material on advanced topics of refactoring, a core software engineering activity which combines engineering practices with programming language skills. Both partners have ample research experience in this topic, and would like to develop an in-depth Master-level course that goes beyond what is commonly taught in software engineering lectures.

Material will comprise programming language foundations (syntax and semantics), algebraic aspects of program construction, and correctness and verification. In addition, participants will be introduced to state of the art refactoring tools, with hands-on exercises in using those tools. The course serves as a foundation for possible Master- and PhD studies on the topic of refactoring.

We intend to meet the objectives/goals of the project by implementing the following activities: international project meetings, guest lectures, development of the joint Master’s course, new teaching material such as lecture notes and exercises, and shared teaching of the new course at each of the partner institutions.

After the project period, we expect the following results and long-term effects:
Strengthened collaboration through joint teaching and Master- and PhD supervision; joint research projects involving students and faculty; increased student mobility through increased awareness of national and international funding possibilities.
